MIS dashboard for Tally, Zoho Books and QuickBooks

Upload the P&L and balance sheet you already export from Tally, Zoho Books, QuickBooks or Excel, as .xlsx or .csv, and ReconScribe builds your MIS dashboard: revenue, margins, cash, working capital and up to 17 ratios. Every import must tie to the statement’s own printed totals before a single figure is stored.

A real MIS result, on sample figures

Acme Industries Pvt Ltd is a fictional company. Its figures run through the same functions that build your dashboard: the normalised P&L, the balance sheet check and the ratios.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Export and upload your statements

Export the Profit & Loss and the Balance Sheet from Tally, Zoho Books, QuickBooks or any accounting software as .xlsx or .csv, and upload each with its own button. Single-period, monthly-column and two-year comparative statements all work. From a comparative statement, only the current year is imported.

  2. Step 2

    Checked, then grouped

Each statement is read and checked against its printed totals. Its ledgers are then grouped into lines such as revenue, cost of sales, salaries and rent. Correct a grouping once and the company keeps it, so next month’s upload picks it up automatically.

  3. Step 3

    Read the dashboard

Six headline cards sit at the top (revenue, gross margin, net profit, cash, working capital and current ratio), then charts for revenue streams, spend, cash and working capital, the P&L and balance sheet, ratios and a written commentary. Pick any run of months: the P&L adds up over it and the balance sheet is taken as at its last month.

What ReconScribe checks

An MIS is only useful if its numbers match the books. The first five checks decide whether an upload is stored at all, whichever way the file was read: by the parser, by a layout remembered from an earlier upload or by AI. The next two apply each time the dashboard is built, and the last is how Indian statements are read and grouped in the first place.

It ties to its own printed totals

Each printed section total (income, cost of sales, expenses, other income, other expenses) must equal the sum of its ledgers, and the printed net profit must equal income less costs. Totals must agree within one rupee or 0.01%, whichever is larger: room for a report rounded for presentation and nothing more.

The balance sheet must balance

Assets must equal liabilities plus equity within one rupee. A Tally or Schedule III liabilities side that prints one total with capital included is checked as a whole.

What does not tie is not stored

A statement that fails is refused with the reason, such as which total is off and by how much. Nothing is saved, and the refused upload does not use your upload allowance, though an AI read made on it still counts toward the month’s AI reads.

AI reads face the same test

When AI reads an unfamiliar layout, every ledger it names must be a row on your sheet carrying that amount, and every total it uses must be printed on the sheet. Then the same check applies.

The wrong file is caught

A balance sheet uploaded as a P&L, or the other way round, is refused. On a monthly P&L, each line’s months must add up to its Total column.

P&L and balance sheet must belong together

If the two are for different dates, or the P&L net profit does not match the balance sheet’s current-year earnings, the ratios that mix them (returns, asset turnover, working-capital days) are hidden rather than guessed.

A quarter is not a year

Receivable, inventory and payable days use the period’s own number of days, and returns are annualised, so a quarter’s P&L is never set against a year-end balance as if it were twelve months.

Indian books read as written

Tally’s (-) and Dr/Cr figures, bracketed negatives and groups such as Sales Accounts, Direct Expenses and Indirect Incomes are understood. GST and TDS balances are never auto-grouped as trade receivables or payables, and a ledger named as an overdraft or cash credit is grouped as short-term borrowing. You can change any grouping.

MIS report format: what a monthly MIS contains

An MIS (management information system) report is the pack management reads each month to see how the business did and where it stands. Whatever template a firm uses, a sound MIS report format comes down to the same building blocks, and the dashboard covers each of them.

Headline figures first: revenue, gross margin, net profit, cash, working capital and current ratio, each compared with the period before when there is one. Then a P&L summary of up to eight lines: revenue, cost of goods sold, gross profit, operating expenses, operating profit (EBIT), other income, other expenses and net profit, each shown as a share of revenue.

Next come trends by month for revenue, profit and margins, revenue and cost by stream as your books name them, and cash, receivables and payables over time. The balance sheet follows in its current and non-current split, with the check that assets equal liabilities plus equity.

Ratios come in four groups: profitability (gross, operating and net margin, return on assets, equity and capital employed), liquidity (current, quick and cash ratio), leverage (debt to equity, debt ratio, interest cover) and efficiency (asset turnover, receivable, inventory and payable days, cash conversion cycle). A short commentary puts it into words: a summary, highlights, watch-outs and actions. Premium adds the schedules many packs carry at the back: receivables and payables aging, sales by product and budget against actual.

Built for Indian statements

Figures are shown in lakh and crore with the rupee symbol by default, and an April to March year is read as one financial year, so FY 2025-26 is a single period. The parser knows Tally’s primary groups on a statement in Tally’s vertical layout, the Schedule III headings, and Zoho Books and QuickBooks layouts. A Tally statement in its side-by-side (horizontal) layout is read by AI instead and checked the same way, so export the vertical layout where you can.

On the free plan each import is kept for 30 days and then deleted with its lines. Your ledger groupings stay, so a later upload is grouped the same way. On premium every import is kept and the dashboard builds month over month.

Sharing the MIS with a client or board

On premium, a read-only link shares the dashboard with a client, partner or board. Add a password of at least 8 characters and an expiry in days, or replace the link with a new one at any time. The shared view shows the dashboard but no ledger-by-ledger list and no bank account names.

Saved reports and period locks are premium too. A saved report keeps a point-in-time copy of the MIS with a PDF download, and a locked period cannot be overwritten by a later upload without the lock password.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MIS report?

An MIS report is the monthly management pack built from the P&L and balance sheet: headline figures, a P&L summary, trends, the balance sheet, ratios and a short commentary. ReconScribe’s dashboard shows 6 headline figures, a P&L summary of up to 8 lines with each line as a share of revenue, up to 17 ratios and a written summary.

Can I make an MIS dashboard from Tally data?

Yes. Export the Profit & Loss and the Balance Sheet from Tally in its vertical layout as Excel (.xlsx) or .csv and upload each one. The parser reads Tally’s groups, such as Sales Accounts and Indirect Expenses, and its (-) and Dr/Cr figures. A statement in Tally’s side-by-side (horizontal) layout is read by AI instead, which uses one of the month’s AI reads (3 on the free plan), and is checked against its totals the same way. An older .xls file needs to be saved as .xlsx first.

Is the MIS dashboard free?

Yes, to try: the free plan gives 10 uploads, once per account owner, with the full chart deck and AI commentary, and each import is kept for 30 days. Premium gives 20 uploads a month per company (statements and datasets together), kept, plus aging, sales and budget datasets, period locks, share links and saved reports.

What happens if my P&L does not tie to its totals?

It is not imported. The upload is refused with the reason, such as which section total is off and by how much, and nothing is stored. Re-export the complete statement with its totals and upload it again. A refused upload does not count against your 10 free uploads or your monthly allowance, though an AI read made on it still counts toward the month’s AI reads.

Which file formats and layouts can I upload?

Two: .xlsx and .csv. Single-period, monthly-column and two-year comparative statements all work. Zoho Books, QuickBooks, Schedule III and Tally’s vertical layout are read directly. An unfamiliar layout is read by AI once, checked the same way and remembered for that company. A Tally statement in its side-by-side (horizontal) layout also needs an AI read, so export the vertical layout where you can. The free plan includes 3 AI reads a month and premium 20.

Can I see the MIS month by month?

Yes. Upload a P&L with monthly columns, or one month at a time, and each month becomes a point on the charts. Choose any run of months and each headline figure is compared with the same number of months just before. On premium every import is kept, so the series grows each month.

Does the AI commentary ever invent numbers?

No. Every figure is worked out from your checked statements before the AI writes, and any sentence with a number that was not supplied is dropped. If the summary fails that test, a plain template is used instead. The free plan writes up to 10 a month for each company, and premium up to 30 with our strongest AI.
